There is a lot of pull for Delvac-1 5w40& M-1 5w40 here

They are the same oil, or so folks on these boards indicate. I'm currently using Royal Purple 5w30 and 10w40. Supposed to be good semi syn with great additives that help clean sludge. Guys have lab tested to 10k with no problem. The only disadvantage is the cost$6-8/qt and lack of easy availability. I got a couple of cases from oiltown.com, but when they're gone I think I may make the switch to the above 5w40 in Delvac-1 or M-1 at less than $5/qt.
I bought a '96 9000 with 122k on the odometer recently with a blown engine. The prior owner bought the car at 80k, with a spotty history of oil changes. He replaced the balance chain right away, and made conventional oil changes every 5k mi. The balance shaft seized shearing off teeth and tying up the motor. The damage may already have been done and this seize inevitable, but I wonder what a good flush and quality syn might have done for this engine.
That is the long answer to SaabDude's question. Yes, I would use a quality syn, and switch without worry of damage to engine or seals. Flush or not, change every 5k for first few oil changes in case you do have a sludge problem. Then change every 5-10k depending on driving habits.
