Aero died on the road today - almost wrecked

Today while exiting the highway on a sharp exit my car suddenly died. About 5 minutes prior I was noticing the car was running rough, whenever I let up on the gas the car felt like it was bucking or something. Right when I was at the apex of the exit curve, the power steering died. I quickly realized the engine was off. Thinking maybe I hit the key, I tried to restart without luck. I only barely avoided wrecking the car, eventually restarting the car at the end of the exit to maneuver to the side of the road.
The car restarted but only remained running if I kept the revs very high. Strangely, I have no brakes, even when it is running. I drove the car on/off the flatbed truck which came to tow me. Some background on this vehicle: about a month ago I brought the car into the dealer for a CEL. This particular CEL would go away when I swapped in my spare DI and I told the dealer about this, so I expected a new DI. Instead I only received the T7 upgrade. I was told that would better manage the old DI. A little over a week ago the CEL came back on. Again I swapped in the spare DI and again the CEL went out. I was going to take it back to the dealer once I had more time in the next week or so. I figured as long as I had my spare DI in I was safe.
While waiting for the tow truck to arrive, I swapped the original back in to see if that made any difference - nada. The vehicle runs just as poorly as before. I'd swear it wasn't getting fuel. From reading posts here, I have a suspicion that maybe my cat got fried while my DI was in the process of dying. The lack of brakes is one thing that's puzzling me though. While the driving the car off the flatbed truck, my CEL was now flashing - not a good sign.
Thoughts/Comments on this whole scenario.
