Glad you're OK!
No brakes when running sounds like a massive vac leak...it would explain alot. The poor running could just be limphome on top of that, I hear it's not pleasant. I've never read about it on a 9-5, but a generic troubleshooting chart would say look at the air mas meter (MAF), too.
I'd guess, tho I don't know for sure, a plugged cat would be even harder to run at higher RPMs. It may depend on if it disintegrated, and where the parts wedged. Again, all guesses...
Did the dealer ever confirm the CEL was a DI code, or did he just flash the ECU?
