Must be alot of that going around. I paid way under wholesale for my 9-5s (99 SE LPT and 00 Aero) and that wasn't even haggling much.
The dealer's the only one who can remotely approach retail, and that's even with CPO. It's the online lots. They buy auction cars, plan a fixed profit, and do volume. The dealer works alot to make deals while these guys have cars flying out their lots. Right now you can probably go on your favoriate auction site and grab an 01 for $12 or so...not to mention a 99.
The problem is this hurts the perception of private party price. Sure, online cars are risky, but it's really hard when you're a private seller and a buyer says 'but I can get your $12K '99 for $7000 on qBay'. It isn't just Saabs either. A guy I know is trying to get rid of his lo-miles, mint 98 Boxster at $22K or so...guys are giving 'em away for $18-19K with less mileage on these sites.
It's becoming an exercise in you finding buyers rather than buyers finding you. That's why the classifieds here are good, the audience can appreciate it. Lesson probably is, I guess you'll never win with a depreciating asset...
