Confused about idler pulley--NOT V6

I've searched previous discussions but find the information I need elusive/confusing. I have a 2000 2.3 lpt (57k miles) wagon, manual transmission. Yesterday it started making a noise--something between a metallic ding-ding-ding and a plastic-y grinding that keeps pace with engine RPMs. Loud enough at idle that it's obvious both in and out of the car. Sounds like it's coming from left side of engine (while facing engine w/open hood).
From what I've read this sounds like idler pulley territory. But noise sounds like description of timing chain on way out.
Questions are this:
Is there a way to tell if it's idler pulley or timing chain?
I understand that if the timing chain breaks it's VERY bad for the engine (though I haven't the foggiest why)--but what about the idler pulley?
Will I ruin the car if I drive it? Should I not even drive it to the mechanic on Monday, let alone do errands today?
Any insights appreciated.
Thanks,
Josh
