Check the plugs/DI Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Tue, 6 Jul 2004 09:50:43 In Reply to: Hesitation after a stop, cloudship, Tue, 6 Jul 2004 09:29:45 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
How do the spark plugs look? They should be a light grey color, not sooty brown or black. The gap should be correct per the manual - not too wide. I would also pull the DI cassette (necessary to get to the spark plugs). Flip the DI over, and remove the plastic cover - held on by torx screws. Hold it up to the light, and see if you can see the oil in the four coils - they should be around 90% full. If one or more is low on oil, if you see oil leaking from the coil, if the circuit board looks burned, or if you see carbon buildup on the coil tip, then the DI is on the way out.
If the plugs are black and fluffy, you're running rich. (mixture, not money). The plugs could be fouling a low rpm. It cleans up because when you shut the engine down, the DI goes through a Clean cycle. If the plugs are black and fluffy, it could be a rich mixture, an oil leak, a bunch of things. I'd expect most would trigger a Check Engine light.
If the plugs are just worn and the gap big, replace them with the exact right plugs (per the manual), gapped per the manual. Don't assume that they come out of the box properly gapped. Usually are, but don't assume.
