Jay: I generally agree with the gist of your argument, but there aee a fw twists to this that you did not get into. First off,if you lease your car, and plan on turning it in with the tires that you purchase, you must turn it in with tires that are like the oem specs of what came with the car,so in this case, putting on S rated tires is fine for the driving part, but not from an economic standpoint unless you are keeping the car.
Second, your point about the sUV's being used to drive 98 pound soccer mom's to the mall and back is right on target. Manufacturers like to exploit the bravado in the part of the public that thinks it is OK to drive whatever speed they feel like. Even 90 in most places is about 30 over the limit, and is illegal. Driving 90 for a minute or two is one thing, driving 130 or more in this country is just plain stupid and illegal,so having a tire that is speced out for SUSTAINED speeds of 150 or more seems kind of foolish to me. Manufacturers put them on though both for liability reasons as well as to appeal to the Speed Racer boy in some of us. Why does a Subaru Impreza WRX-STI need a wing the size of a Boeing 757 on it's trunk? Same reason. A lot of it is marketing.Big wide low profile high performance tires do their job more on the showroom floor than on the road.
