Tire questions

I have read thru numerous tire threads but still have some newbie type questions, so here goes...
I have Michelin OEM tires on my SE. I don't like them at all. They are noisey and handling is average.. BUT, they seem to have great tread life.
Now I busted one front tire. The other three have considerable remaining tread. Since I don't want the OEM tires, I am inclined to order two new tires, rather than one OEM replacement. (I am assuming 1 new non-matching tire won't ride well.) Any compelling reason to replace all 4 if the remaining tires have a good year of tread left? (I use snows in the winter).
Based on what I read here, and that I want something quieter, I am leaning toward: Dunlop SP9000, Yoko's or Continental ContiExtremeContact. They are all cheaper then the OEM Michelins.
Questions:
Any specific experiences with those tires?
I have seen remarks here about "plus 0" sizing. What are the benefits and how feasible is that for 2 tires only?
Also, I assume the newest tires should be on the front of a front wheel drive car. Any reason they should be on the back?
