this is subjective to the amount of wear on the old tires. I put new tires on the front since the rear still have 7/32 which is more than enough to avoid hydroplaning. Rosso only has 10/32 when new. Also, ESP makes this less crucial.
Newer on rear is a good rule of thumb and protects manufacturers/installers from liability. Better to understeer than oversteer is the justification for this reasoning. Not easy to recover from bad oversteer.
