Stumbling...Mech says bad AC Compressor

I have been experience the common symptom of what feels like misfiring on my 99 9-5. It happens intermittently.
Rather than just replace the DI cassette, I took it to an indipendent Saab mechanic to have it diagnosed.
He says the AC Compressor is locking up causing the engine to stumble.
There are no Tech II codes, but there is a code 08 for the ACC system. I think this has something to do with the mixing flap, so is probably un-related.
Anyone ever hear of this?
I plan to run the car for a week or so in Econ mode and see if it stumbles.
Unfrotunately, an AC Compressor replacement is $1100.
I can get a used compressor for < $200, but it is probably a bear to install. Plus, I would have to make 2 trips to the shop to have it evacuated, then refilled.
Looking for tips, experience, and advice.
Thanks,
James
