Aero Turbo (TD04) on a 99 9-5 2.3 LPT engine

Well, it is time to replace my Turbo (44k miles.. lots of smoke, etc)
I'm considering taking advantage of this to upgrade.
I was talking with Nick at Taliaferro (http://www.genuinesaab.com). He recommended upgrading to the turbo of an Aero (Mitusbishi TD04). Says they're pretty bullet proof and even a used unit will provide dependable performance.
Since cash is tight, I like this approach. I can get the turbo from between $320 and $500 from a salvage yard. I don't have any immediate plans to upgrade the ECU programming. Would I need to?
It is definitely something I plan to do down the road, but like I said, not a lot of free cash right now.
Basically, I'm looking for advice or experiences regarding this approach.
I suppose I have some other options:
1) rebuild the one I have. Will I just ge the same problems 50K miles down the road?
2) get the Abbot racing upgraded GT-17 (too $$$).
3) new unit from Saab (hear these are rebuilt as well).
4) go with a differnet turbo (a different Garrett?). Maybe more headaches this route.
Thanks,
James
