I my case a very nice guy from a company that specializes in this area came to my place of work (or any other place you choose). I made a point of making it easy for him to find my car (which was in a downtown underground ramp). It pays to be nice. As to the tires, the agreement of my car said 1/4 inch (8/32nds). That is the standard. I was exactly at 8/32nds. The guy said that this was the final inspection and that the dealer would just glance at the car to make sure it was damaged.
My tires were the 17 Michelin's so they didn't start out with much more than 1/4 inch. My tire store said I had two more summers on them (I use winter tires). Mealer might give you a break but don't count on it. In my case though the original selling dealer called me out of the blue and said he wanted the car for his dealer stock (it was perfect, no dings). He said that of coiurse since he was buying it there wouild be no $350 fee and there wasn't. Good luck.
