Royal Purple is no good according to dealer, has it hurt my car?

I took my 99 9-5 to the dealer because of a rattling noise from the engine. They tell me my timing chain has stretched because it was not getting lubricated properly. They also said my engine looked like one on a 100K mile old car (I have 42K on it) with tons of sludge and deposits. The dealership blames this on the fact that I have religiously changed my oil every 3K miles with Royal Purple oil. They say it is junk and I should stick to Mobil 1.
Any thoughts?
Have I ruined my engine?
