John...
I've followed these boards quite closely for the last few years.. and relied on them heavily when I purchased by 2001 2.3 lpt. Based on my readings/experiences.. here are the more common things to look out for with the 2001 9-5..
1) Turbo Seal problem- seen as a white puff of smoke on startup.. requires replacement of entire turbo. (only a problem with 2.3 lpt non-aero version)
2) Direct Ignition Cassette - fails without warning. (all versions).
3) AC Bypass valve - low groan can be heard while car is running
4) noisy steering rack - mild whishing sound hear sometimes when cold .. especially if making extreme left/right turns.
5) Headlight bulbs tend to burn out rather frequently (15-20k) on some of these cars.. Not a big deal.. just annoying for some...
Once again, these are the more common problems folks seem to mention, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they are common problems to this model. I've been fortunate thus far with mine (knock on wood!) with 52,000 miles ... but I would try to get a CPO version if at all possible..
Best of luck...Mike
