I had an '01 base wagon with stick for about a year and a half and 14,500 miles before it was totaled in a flood. I have now had an '02 Linear wagon with stick for the past two years and 14,000 miles. In my opinion the '02 is a much better car in terms of ride, handling, looks (admittedly, that's subjective) and reliability.
The '01 was delivered with a leaking steering rack, replaced at the 30 day service. It suffered from the then common gas tank thumping, AC "groan" (neither of which are a big deal) and plastic creaking near the instrument cluster. The shift linkage was not good - it took a lot of force to pull the lever out of 3rd gear. There is a fix for the linkage, and I suppose I would have had it done if the car hadn't been totalled. A bad contact in the steering wheel assembly caused the air bag light to come on and the steering wheel radio volume control to die. A headlight reflector unit was replaced to correct a very odd beam pattern.
In contrast, in two years the '02 has suffered only a climate control fan problem which was diagnosed as a bad ground. That's it.
Given what appears to be a better reliability record, at least for me, and, IMHO, better handling and ride, I would look for an '02.
