Saab puts a million pads a year on the cars they build, and probably 3 times that many (maybe a whole lot more) into the spare parts network. I doubt they're paying 20 bucks a pad. Could EBC pads be twice, or three times the money as the pads Saab is using when purchased in quantity? Don't know, but I could guess...
In Saab's defense, the pads they use are quiet, reasonably long lasting, and reasonably fade resistant. They don't make any more dust than other European cars seem to have. In years past, they actually had problems with pads that were too gentle to the rotors, resulting in rough braking due to corrosion on part of the rotor in places with winter snow, ice, and salt.
AS an owner, we have a lot more freedom to pick and choose, often on "word of mouth" endorsement and without any kind of test program.
