According to documentation I've seen there is a transmission fluid temperature sensor that drives a SID warning. This is also mentioned here:

"If....the temperature goes above 170°C. A warning will post on the SID unit "Transmission Overheating" this will also set a code in the ECU and the Trans fluid should be changed."
The implication is that it was new for '00 in the US market. That means it was added at some point, and not part of the original design. My guess is that it was introduced outside the US market sooner, but as your car was one of the first out the door anywhere, it may or may not have had that capability.
