Buying a Saab!! At Last!!

Omg I'm going to buy this fantastic looking Saab from this guy next week! And its the first ever car that I'm buying for myself! And its a Saaaab!! Weeeeee.....!!!
But I need some help before I can officially become a Saab-ist!
Since its the first time I'm actually buying a car, and from a private-party too... I'm thinking its kind of a tricky transaction for a newbie like me.
I'm in LA, and one thing I'm not too sure is should I arrange for one of those internet mechanics to check on the car for me and send me one of those 150pt inspection reports? Or what about those Saab workshops in LA? Is it better for me to take the car down to those workshops to have it checked up? Would that be cheaper?
Hehe and one more thing, when transferring the vehicle title and everything.... do I pay the person only after I get a title from the DMV which has my name on it or what? I'm really not too sure about the whole process even though I've been spending the past few hours reading through the DMV website... I just don't think its such a good idea to let the seller know I'm not familiar with the transfer process just in case he might try to pull a fast one on me or something.
