There's a Craftsman set which includes a 2 1/4 ton jack with two jackstands. Plenty of capacity for a 9-5 and the range of motion is good. The set was under $100. I've been very happy with mine.

oh hell I just checked for you. The 2 1/4 ton jack with stands set is on their website for $55. 5.5" to 15". They have a 3 ton model for ~$80, not sure what's different except the extra capacity.

Aluminum, steel, it doesn't really matter. I suppose the Al will be lighter to carry around, but I can't see how that'd be worth $58.

Yup you generally jack one side up at a time. Best location? Tough question. Look for a sturdy looking piece of the chassis and give it a shot. It would be nice if there were arrows or something showing where to go.

Key thing: never work under a car that is only supported by a jack! (if you didn't already know) Always put the car up on jackstands and/or ramps.
