considering entering 9-5 world, looking for caveats

Greetings!
I've been casing the Ebay listings for 9-5s lately, and as a 93 9000 turbo veteran (of several), I'm looking for any and all warnings/recommendations for the DIY type like myself with these models. The goal here is to acquire someone's cast-off, fix it up, and have the same or less invested in the end. This way if the car blows up it's not the end of the world.
Without a Tech II, is one perennially doomed to expensive hired mechanics' diagnosis and repair, or can one do most of the work oneself? I have rebuilt 2.3 engines, pulled transmissions, etc., so that I'm not necessarily put off by any repair. However, if computerized diagnostics are required for most things, I may be unable to justify a 9-5. After all, nothing's wrong with my 9000 at the moment and I can fix anything that breaks relatively cheaply.
How are parts for price and availability? Service manuals? What are trouble spots to look for? Etc.? Thanks in advance for your input!
