perform a compression and leak down test of each cylinder.
The compression test in itself will not say much on a fairly good engine but the leak down will most likely give an indication if something is going on with the piston rings.
It will take about 1 hour on a 4 cyl and 1 1/2 hour on a V6.
If you have more than 15-20% leakdown by testing through sparkplug hole, it is something going on.
Next step would be to remove cylinder head and use a block off plate over each cylinder to test for leak down again.
That way you eliminate a possibility of leaking intake/exhaust valve and check just the piston rings themself. You should get about 5-10% leakdown at the most of just the piston rings.
