Hmmm. Thanks for the heads up. I should know better.
I typically am bonused for compensation, and I have a lot of equity in my house, so I've found it easier to write a check on an equity line of credit to buy a car or prepay a lease and pay myself back while deducting the interest, and eventually pay off the line of credit with a good bonus. Also good for cash flow as I don't have to make a payment every month.
Under these circumstances, however, your comment makes a lot of sense if I can prepay the balance on the lease payments at any time when a bonus (hopefully) comes in. I think then that if I do a prepay in this situation, then I am trading my prime+1 interest that can be written off to take it down to about prime in the end and the freedom from structured payments for structured payments at 1%. So, I would be paying a higher interest rate than I could get from Saab for that period of time until I will get the bonus (December) and pay off the line of credit.
Also, as for the 30 v. 36 month lease, my theory is that at the end of the 30 month lease, I will be able to buy below residual anyway due to the probable redesign of the 9-5 by then.
Does this make any sense?
