I dont agree about the passport issue, as a UK citizen and permanent resident of the US I would expect to be able to do european delivery and pick it up with my UK passport. However, you'd have to show up at a US dealer to buy the car, not having a permanent US address might be a problem, although a hotel address might work, and you'd need to pay in cash since SFSC is not going to loan you anything with no address and credit history..
OK so just supposing you get out of the trollhatten gates in your new us spec 9-5. The major issue is one of importing a non EU spec car into germany. I know it can be done in the UK with a bit of work - and the payment of taxes (17.5%) due on any new car, but no duty since the car is made in the EU.
There might be some problems with insuring such a grey market import.
All in all a lot of hassle for one purchase, however such parallel routes could be researched and exploited on a larger scale by some enterprising company. They would take your money/finance application and place the order with a US dealer on your behalf, then you can pick up the car and drive to your location in the EU and use their supplied documentation/services to register it locally.
Of course this would probably result in the european delivery program being shut down, so please ignore this idea.
