Besides being thicker at the cold end, the hot 40 wt is also slightly thicker than the 0W-40, & the High Temperature/High Shear rating is better as well (more protection for red hot, high speed turbos). Throw in the more robust additive package of the 5W-40 & it's simply a better oil for long drains in turbocharged engines, whether they're gasoline or diesel. (If I lived next door to Ian in sunny Florida, I'd only run 15W-50 in my Saab.)
Saab announced in July of 2000 that they were Factory Filling with 0W-40 full syn, but up to now it hasn't been Mobil 1. You're right, Saab-branded oils are not the same as Mobil 1 oils of the same viscosity.
