OK, those figures might seem exaggerated and I'll admit I wasn't exactly comparing apples to oranges. But fuel economy did suffer, as I keep very detailed records.
Allow me to clarify:
With M1 0W-40 my usual "city" fuel economy is about 24-26 miles per gallon. With Delvac 1 5W-40 it went down to 21. The EPA's city rating is 22 mpg for my particular car ('02 Aero sedan with stick)
With M1 0W-40 my best ever highway fuel economy (long summer trip, cruise control at 70-75 mph) was 35 mpg. With Delvac 1 5W-40 the best ever was about 30. EPA highway rating for my car is 31 mpg.
With Delvac 1, the vibration at idle with the SAAB were quite noticeable especially when the AC is engaged. My engine always had/has a smooth idle with other oils.
With D1, the engine also tended to "buck" at low rpm, for example, when coming to a stop in traffic in second gear, as the rpm falls down to about 1,200 rpm. Doesn't happen with other oils...
