Three things stop an engine from starting (running), fuel, electrical, or ignition.
In your case, the clicking is usually indicative of a dead battery, the clicking caused by the starting relay (solenoid) trying to engage. Diming of the dash lights confirms this.
Obviously, lack of fuel will stop a car (fuel pump, filters etc).
Ignition is the next detractor, and in the case of SAABs, the failure of DIs seems to be a recurring component whose failure stops SAABs in their tracks.
Since your car was running, had a check engine light, and subsequently stopped, the starter and/or electrical are probably not a factor. Once running, the starter is out of the picture. If the charging system failed, you would get an indication, eventually the battery would fail stopping the electrial fuel pump leading to fuel starvation and causing the car to stop.
It seems failure of the DI does indeed cause a check engine light and since this component directly effects the ignition (provides spark), it follows this would cause the engine to stop.
Hope this helps
tom
