Failure driving home and now not turning over

Driving home yesterday, and after a couple of hundred miles (and only a few miles from home) the Check Engine light came on and the engine cut out.
Trying to restart it does nothing except dim the lights on the dashboard (and the internal lights if on) - there is a bit of a click but nothing else.
No warning lights before the failure, and temperature was OK
Recovery man said battery, but a new battery has had no effect
It's an auto, and I have tried pushing it forward and back in 1st and Reverse and this seems to be OK (does this work on an auto to see if the engine has seized?)
Any thoughts would be gratefully received
Thanks
Nick
