As a dealer I must recommend following the owners manual recommendations.
If it were my car it would be WOT 9wide open throttle) until it breaks, which it won't, break that is. In my 30 years in the car biz I have never had a break in issue. I had a couple of Saturns driven by little old lady types that never broke in and experienced oil consumption and carbon build up issues. I have experienced several cars who were broken in hard and consequently run stronger than most.
I think manufacturers recommending a break in interval is a very conservative, self serving policy. A Saab Arc engines produces almost 100hp per liter, racing engine territory of just a few years ago and breaking it in like a racing engine, WOT from the beginning, doesn't seem to hurt a bit and can add to the ultimate performance availible.
I don't think it's possible for a sane person to break-in their car too hard on public roads. Where you gonna' go a WOT over 5,000 for more than a brief time on a public road in the US.
I second the "thegage" post about not changing synthetic too soon to ensure complete break-in.
