Ed,
here's my experience with 99 9-5 SE V6 (72K)
fuel filler neck (free CEL)
fuel tank replace 50K (free CEL)
water pump 52K
power steering pump 56K
timing belt 60K (free one time replacement)
battery 65K
front break pads (70K)
ABS control 71K
I purchased the car used at 48K.
Fortunately, I've done all except timing belt, so my cost has not been to great. Compared to other non-SAAB cars I've owned, I think this is a lot.
This is my first Saab. The drive is exceptional, handling is equal to or exceeds by 5 series BMW.
My main concern is the high rate of failure among ignition components (DI) common to SAABs. Most other problems I've seen exibit themselves in a manner that gives advance warning of impending failure. I knew my water pump was failing for a couple weeks (sound). The brakes were routine maintenance, the battery became weaker and weaker, the CEL was troubling, but eventually repaired, the ABS control leaked break fluid, but the DI failures are a real show stopper.
Obviously, this is my opinion, other owners have just as valid ones.
