semi - OT disk brake

Hi,
I note that my 9-5 has the disk brake caliper assby mounted in front of the axle center line for the front wheels and behind for the rear ones. Many cars have this arrangement – but many others mount the caliper assby behind the axle center line on the fronts (e.g., a BMW 5-series in my lot). Indeed, calipers are in many positions (excep below the axle).
Does anyone have a convincing argument as to why the calipers are placed where they are? I thought that placing them up front might be good for heat dissipation but wonder since it is not universal. Is packaging the only (or main) factor?
