Most cars have the steering linkage behind the axle centerline - mounting the front calipers behind would be a challenge, what with the tie-rod attached there. But some cars, especially old fashioned US cars (and MB) with recirculating ball steering gear rather than rack and pinion, have the steering gear in front of the axle centerline. Hence the reverse.
