and get a hold of Saab Service Manual #0349183 Service manual: B234/B204 Basic engine. It's not for the 3.0 but all the timing details will steer you straight. Charge the customer for it-it's $22 he'll appreciate.
Having purchased and used the tool set a few times I can tell you that you could likely do without them. But it will never be as accurately done. The reference marks on the rear cover behind the cam sprockets just aren't accurate enough and parallax error while sighting compounds the problem. It's one thing to take such a chance with your own project but quite another when taking a lot of money from a customer. You are right about saving the customer money going this route but you and him have to be aware that there is a chance that piston damage may have occurred. I don't think it's as much a function of the valve strikes, as where they hit is pretty defined, as it is where the inevitable broken bits of valve guide get hammered into the piston.
Be sure to take a good look at the cam seals.
