I just purchased a 1999 Saab 9-5 2.3L and love it! Recently I brought it to my local Saab dealer for the 30K service and to have them look at a noise coming from the pulley area of the engine.
They told me that the "balance shaft chain" needs to be replaced. They also told me that this was not covered under the factory warranty as the engine oil looks "black" like it has never been changed. Since I just bought the car (and I'm obviously not the original owner) I have very few receipts for the oil changes. The original owner says that all of the receipts were in the glove box, but the dealer must have tossed them when cleaning out the car before selling it. I also tried to call the service station where the work was done to get copies of the receipts, but they didn't seem interested in assisting me in any way. I have managed to find three receipts, but they want a total of six receipts or I'll have to come up with $2000.00 to pay for this work to be done.
What the hell can I do? I just bought this car, now I'm in for another 2-G's since I can't produce receipts for oil changes????
Does anyone have any suggestions? I know the previous owner took care of this car, but would not changing the oil on a regular basis cause a major part such as the "balance shaft chain" to go bad after only 36K miles? It seems to me that a part like this should be good for 2 to 3 times that amount.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
