I have removed them on several NG900 4 cyl engines so far but non of the 9-3/9-5 engines.
I have not heard of any 9-3/9-5 with balance chain problems, only balance chain issues related from an oil sludge problems.
It is possible to remove the oil pan and cut the balance chain off from under and pull it out but I'm hesitant to do it on a good working engine that has been maintained properly.
You might feel an increase in vibrations after that, some people are more aware of vibrations then others.
On the NG900 engines that I removed the chain on I couldn't really feel a difference, but that could be due to that the engine was vibrating badly when it came in since the balance shaft sprockets had failed and were out of tune with the engine.
