If the car is out of warranty I would try to find a good indy and have his take on it.
Also, do a search for balance chain and related issues on the NG900 board.
That will give you lots of information. Your engine is fairly similar to the one in those 900s.
I would first of all look for oil sludge problems and a worn/scratched oil pump reducer valve.
Even maybe take out the oil pump and look for wear that the balance chain sprockets could have caused.
It sounds a little bit strange that they can conclude just by listening to the engine that it needs a new balance chain. It takes quite a bit more labor to be really sure about it.
It could just as easy be the timing chain slapping against the rubber pad inside the valve cover.
