None of that sounds too serious to me. Let's see:

In the past year or so, it seems like I have had a string of problems with my 2000 9-5 SE:

catalytic converter
> probably wiped by the DI failure. Cat should have been checked after DI failure. Never heard of a cat fail otherwise unless it was plugged by wrong fuel/corroded/broke/fell off.

2 batteries
> 2? So you needed a new battery (regular maintenance; batteries in a modern high electrical load car last on average three years) and it was bad and replaced again? Hopefully the battery's warranty covered it... just bad luck and the fault of the battery manufacture not the fault of the car.

DI cassette
> Saab Achilles heel.... sounds like lots of guys around here carry a spare. At least on a V6 you are still running on three when it fails....

brakes and rotors
> Normal maintenance every so often on any car. Not a reliability issue as they don't 'suddenly go' - you can check the brake condition during your weekly tire check just by looking through the wheels. Will never leave you stranded.

, etc.). The dealer I use has been superb and helped a great deal even after the warranty expired.

But now that this car has left me stranded on a few occassions, I'm feeling a bit gun shy about this vehicle. The car only has 65k on it, and I'd like to think it has a lot of life left, but reading these messages makes me wonder "what's next...and when?"

> So basically, you had one failure (DI) and the other items are normal maintenance. If it really bothers you, get AAA (CAA? or whatever) and carry a spare DI.

Did you get the timing belt and pulleys replaced at 60k? Saab pays for the belt but not the pulleys. If the pulleys were not done (regular maintenance!) then there is another potential failure point.

The secret to reliability on any European car is agressive preventive maintenance... replace stuff when it's due.
