I used to be a die hard stick box guy. Then I drove the autoboxen at the Aero Academy. I was very impressed.

Then in July we had to take advantage of another steel grey wagon with huge savings. But the problem was that it was an automatic, which the wife wanted as this was to be her daily driver. She was not too thrilled with getting the same color at the time, but after a test run, the color did not matter at all.

So I deviate... I am extremely impressed with the 5 spd automatic. It is faster than the stick shift in almost, or perhaps all situations. When you get on the throttle the torque converter slip allows the engine to get onto high gas flows very fast and that gets the turbo on boost really fast. Meanwhile the torque converter is doing its thing and you have power, lot it and it comes on very fast. This combo really eliminates the problem of turbo lag that you get with a stick shift. I have been guardily ethusiatic about the automatic but I have been thinking that it deservers my full enthusiatic endorsement. We have two Aero wagons and I get to switch back and forth routinely and the automatic never fails to impress me. It is a better match with the turbo engine than the stick shift.

So there it is. The automatic is not a compromise. It is faster and more agile. You do not have to wait for power, it is there all the time. As I posted yesteday, there is a steel grey wagon in KC... probably is an autobox. But it does have roof rails!
