Somebody used a can of the mechanic-in-a-bottle on their NG900 a year or two back and blew the engine in very short order. There are wrong choices but I don't know if we ever found out what the specific product was.
Quality oil these days has good additives. The conventional wisdom of adding a bottle of this or that is very old -- thirty, forty years ago, when oil was pretty crappy and a pint of STP gave you a little extra additive protection.
The only sort of 'oil burning' problem that an additive would help is very sticky rings, where you might run a bottle of Marvel Mystery Oil. That's not usually the case in these cars but you never know.
Slick50 and its 'wear-reducing' ilk has been pretty thoroughly debunked. AutoRX has a good reputation, but it is a cleaner, it actually makes no claims about seals although the testimonials lead you to believe that. That may be an effect of the ring issue above.
If you're getting excessive lifter noise and smoke, you have an issue. The last time I got lifter noise on a modern Saab, I had to leave the car sitting for six months without starting it, and then it only ticked for about a minute on thin oil.
I'd make sure the car is putting out good pressure, do an auto-rx cycle (it's not just 'pour', you have to do a wash cycle and a rinse cycle), and use good oil. Stay away from what's on special at Pep Boys -- I've asked them enough times in the past to get recommended every product on the shelf, so it inspires no confidence.
