GM was only a co-owner, 50%, of Saab when the 9-5 was entirely designed and engineered by Saab. GM did make a massive investment in the Trollhattan plant in new equipment and zero defect manufacturing processes for 9-5 production. You can also blame GM for making a 9-5 one of, if not the most, reliable European cars that has come to market.

If it weren't for GM there might not be a Saab to criticize. I applaud GM's co-operation in keeping the cars from Trollhattan availible to you and me. The latest Saab/GM collarboration, the 9-3SS, has been a runaway sales hit producing record US sales. Let's hope the latest round of GM European plant closings dodges Saab.

I assume your 2001 is a 2.3 LPT or you would have noted the engine change. You'll find all that extra horsepower, 175 vs 220, at higher speeds, goose it at 80mph and the difference will shine through. Around town they'll feel pretty close. You probably didn't notice how good the new 5 speed auto is. Did you get a chance to play with the paddles?

Just about every complaint you mentioned has been addressed in later Saab designs like the 9-3SS. Hopefully the "MCE", mid cycle enhancement for 2006 or 2007 for the 9-5 will make you happy.

I myself rather like the richness and old worldlyness of the current 9-5 interior.
