Narrower, taller tires are better for deep snow traction. I use 195-65R15 Nokian NRW as my snow tires and OEM 215-55R16 MXV4 as my summer tires. On my '01 base wagon, there is little difference in dry road handling, the NRWs are perceptibly noisier, and the ride on NRW is smoother due to increased sidewall height.

If your winter conditions are like those around here ( always very cold (-30ish) and icy, occasional deep snow, terrible rough potholed roads ) then the extra sidewall height and narrower tread of the 15" tire will serve you well. If you are in a more moderate climate with better road conditions then 16" will work too, but in that case I might reconsider the dedicated snow tires in favour of the WR/NRW.

Basically, I think that if you expect to encounter severe enough winter conditions that require a dedicated snow tire, you might want to consider 15" rims. If you think you can get away with the "all weather" WR/NRW (I've been very happy with mine), then 16" rims will result in somewhat improved dry road behavior.

I'm going into my third winter now on the 15"/NRW combination and I have been EXTREMELY PLEASED with the performance of these, here in the Great White North. I think the tire choice makes way more difference than the rim size choice.
