in the referenced posting. All I would add is that SAE has turned the low temperature specification on its head from what it used to be. Now, a viscosity range is specified and the temperature at which the oil thickens to that viscosity defines its "W" weight. It used to be that a temperature was defined and the viscosity measurement at that temperature defined the "W" weight. Maybe the new system more accurately describes the behavior of synthetics and Viscosity Modifiers.
As for gap, he should bear in mind that engine oil recommendations are based in part on what is widely available on the shelves as well as what is optimum for the engine - thus the oil requirements for the newer engines may be more of a reflection on what the lubricant manufacturers are able to produce than a reflection on changes in the engine. 10W30 is a pretty good choice for conventional oil, but if you're making the jump to synthetic, that grade is kind of archaic.
