1) Remove the engine cover, this is the plastic shroud that surrounds the oil fill/dip stick. Two plastic clips hold it to a flange beneath the dip stick cap, and a metal clip locates the other end on an engine lifting eye.
2) Look at/feel the bottom of the plastic fitting which connects a 1/2-inch rubber hose to the valve cover. If a small hose is connected to this fitting, the PCV work was not done. If this fitting is capped on the bottom and a small hose connects to the side of the oil fill tube, the PCV work was done.
The other end of this small hose will connect to the throttle body and have a check-valve at its the mid point. This hose/valve combination is prone to rotting/failing and will need to be replaced sometime (i.e. 3 to 4 years or 75,000 to 100,000 miles). When it fails you will get engine odors in the cabin but the car still runs fine.
I did the PCV work my self at about the same mileage point you are now. I had no symptoms of a bad PCV system but did it as a preventive measure, plus all my hoses were rotten from miles/age and needed to be replaced anyway - may as well enlarge the oil trap orifice and relocate the small hose at the same time.
There are two important maintenance tasks with these cars:
1) Change your oil and filter at regular intervals using a symthetic oil and quality filter. (I use Mobil 1 0W/40 and A-C Delco filter at 5,000 miles).
2) Follow Saab's recommendations as printed in their service manual.
Enjoy your new car!
