My blower was as well "on the fritz". It was working only some of the time. I pulled it, removed the brushes and sprayed the thing down with electrical cleaner. It works like a champ again.
It's a PAIN in the BUTT to get to the blower. It's housed center right below the leading edge of the windshield. You have to pull the wipers which is really a lot of grunting. I used a screwdriver to gain leverage but everyone seems to preach a puller. A puller probably poses lest risk to cracking the windshield, but whatever works...
After the wipers are off then you have to take the big plastic cover. There are a couple more covers but eventually you should be able to get the blower.
Don't make the mistake I did and try to force the thing out. I did a little too much pushing and pulling and tweaked the fan. It's unbalanced now and sounds horrible at times. If you pull enough of the housing out it should come out without too much manipulation.
So yeah, once you have the motor out then it's easy to service the brushes. They are on opposite sides on the motor and held in with a clamp and springs. You're best bet is to remove these and replace them if possible. Mine weren't so worn down so I just cleaned the brushes and the contact surface and plugged it into a battery as a test before reinstalling.
Best of luck. =)
