My wife called me at work yesterday and said there were two quarter sized oil spots on the garage floor where I park the Saab. I checked them out when I got home last night and the two spots were both located right of the car's centerline, and about one foot ahead of the front axle.

The oil was far too clean to be engine oil and had no odor of transmission fluid. A quick look under the car revealed the right hand side of the underbody shield beneath the radiator support was wet with this same fluid. Transmission fluid was full, engine coolant was full, engine oil was down slightly (4,000 miles since last change), but power steering fluid was off the stick. The power steering pump and all hoses are clean and dry, pump is silent. I made a trip to the Dealer to buy a pint of fluid, got a liter (ouch!), and re-filled the resevoir.

The WIS doesn't make any mention of a power steering cooler and has no good diagram of hose routing. A photograph of the avaiable hoses from a site sponsor indicates what appears to be a "poor man's oil cooler" in the pump discharge line. This hose appears to run from the pump to the radiator support where it changes to a metal tube, the metal tube then runs across the length of the radiator support, makes a U-bend, and runs back to the general area of the pump. There this tube connects to a second hose which runs to the steering rack behind the engine.

My guess is the metal tube section of the first hose acts as an oil cooler, and mine probably has a small leak from chafing, corrosion, or road debris damage.

Am I barking up the right or wrong tree? Any recommendations for products/materials to use as a temporary repair on this leaking oil cooler line until the hose arrives? I will be removing the underbody shield beneath the radiator support tonight to do a better inspection - assuming I get home before dark. I was planning to do X-mas shopping Friday but now looks like I will spend the day working on my car.

Thanks.
