I love my 01 but the 02 was tweaked for better handling. Nothing dramatic but I think they addressed what I think is a small fault on the 01. When plunging into a curve at highway speed, I get a small impression that the car wants to understeer, but it's not a big issue. More importantly, if you are looking for a slush-box, the excellent 5 speed auto was introduced on the 02. Had it been available in 01, I would have been tempted to drop the stick, which is nevertheless quite OK. As far as reliability, both MY are prone to the same failures, the most common one being the DI cassette. If it has been changed and the software upgraded, chances are good that you will never hear about it. Some cars had issues with the turbo but that was not widespread and not a major problem. I am sure the faulty units, which blew out a bit of blue smoke at start-up when cold, have been replaced. As usual, suggest you buy a car that has been well maintained with good service record. Still today, I would have trouble choosing another car over the 9-5, specially that I could get a new 9-5 for less than I paid for the 01. Maybe I would look at a Volvo wagon, but I still think the 9-5 wagon is the nicest wagon out there. Hope to see you join this BB.
