UPDATE: Steering spline "click" debunked. . . .

At least in my personal experience, my 2001's mild steering click disappeared . . . after I had the entire steering rack replaced under warranty.
The dealership diagnosed on their own that the rack was leaking, yet apparently didn't take very seriously the "lube the splines" posting sample I attached to my service request. I can't prove what they did or didn't repair, but there was no reference to lubing the splines on the service report.
I wish I had more specifics to post--this was a very rushed week and I had no time to chat with the service writer when I picked up the repaired vehicle. They seem also to have performed a crankcase vent mod, also diagnosed on their own, along with a headgashet replacement, all at 48k-miles and the twilight of my factory warranty covereage.
