Seems that the other folks responded as if you were asking about the crossbars that tie the roof rails together.
I think that the wagon always comes with the roof rails. It's good to have them just in case it is optional. The cross bars are extra and go on and off quite easily. The roof rails add a tiny amount of wind noise but it is probably only noticable with a heavy cross-wind and no radio playing. The cross bars are another story. They're loud and hurt your gas mileage a bit. I only put those on when I need to carry the roof box or bike rack. I don't use the crossbars for a 4x8 sheet of plywood. I just strap that to the roof rails.
