I'm a bit biased, but there is a reason that AMSOIL recommends miles (hours) OR time, unless using oil analysis.
I've found 10K/1 year on AMSOIL to be fine for my turbos since about 1988.
There are some synthetics I wouldn't try for that long.
Any of the AMSOIL products will go as long as the longest factory recommendation (at a minimum). Obviously, bigger sumps with more oil have the capability of lasting longer.
Yep, they used to say "Don't break an engine in on synthetic". Doing so would often result in some oil consumption since breakin was slowed.
In the past 30 years, the engine manufacturing procedures have improved tremendously, with very close tolerances. No problem dropping synthetic in and going.
If you are having Tom down at the corner rebuild an engine for you, then I'd certainly break it in on non-synthetic until convinced all was seated properly and oil consumption (if any) had leveled off.
