I was new to Saab last year when I got my '03 9-5 Arc, and I love it. It's a v6, which to many long-time Saab fans is not true to the Saab engine heritage. However, I love the engine, and have had no problems at all with it. It feels like torque is just a toe tap away, whereas my experience test driving the Aero was it had a bit of a lag before the real torque kicked in. However, when winding up my v6, it definately has less power than the Aero, which feels like its in a whole different class. The auto tranny (the same as in the '04 Acura TL) is top-notch. As far as '04 vs '03, Ells listed de-costing differences, and there's always the lower value on a model year older vehicle (though you can factor that in during your negotiations).
If I had it to do over again, I'd likely look harder at the Aero, and go for the '04 (despite the decosting), though would not be adverse to an '03 at an attractive price. However (sorry Saab loyalists, please don't blackball me!), this is a good time to be looking for entry-level luxury car that comfortably seats 4, and I'd also look at the Acura TL, Infinity G- and I-35, Volvo S60, Lexus ES330, Lincoln LS, Chrysler 300C (not a fan of the Caddy CTS syling; the MBZ C-class, BMW 3-series, Audi A4, and Lexus IS300 too small; other cars I can think of are in a higher price tier). I did this last year and picked my Saab, but the competition has certainly gotten stiffer.
Jeez, sorry for the long-winded response. I guess I'm procrastinating wrapping my Christmas presents!
