Paul H, I had my own version of a vehicle transit damage, but had no problems at all in having he shipping service stand by the repair. I suggest immediately notifying the shipper (the one you're contracted with, not the drop-off service) of the damage, then file a claim with them using an estimate from the auto body repair service you choose. If they balk at your claim, find out if your auto or (if applicable) home insurance carrier covers you for this type of damage. If all else fails, small claims court may be in your future, though consider hiring an attorney if the shippers are lying about the damage (its called fraud).
My wife and I moved from Utah to Hawaii in the late '80s (pre-Saab days). The shipper neglected to take my wife's Honda off the boat, which wasn't due back into Honolulu for another month. The shipper also dropped a shipping crate on top of my Toyota pickup, causing major damage. Shipper paid my wife to rent a yee-haw convertible (OK, it was just a Sunbird), and me a minivan (to cart my mountain bike around in search of new trailheads). Repair to my pickup was crappy, but I sold it to a Tongan who had it shipped to Tonga. Wife's Honda came back in fine shape (actually, we didn't care, it was a 6 year old base model Civic). Shipper made sure all was good with us the whole time.
